Amusing Ourselves to Death by Stuart McMillen (May 2009)

On Forgetting
Don’t.
On Choices
Choices; we make them every day, we make them so much that if we said “choices” every time we made a choice, it wouldn’t even sound like a word anymore. Which is fine because it’s not just a word, it’s every god-damn lifestyle there is. I’ve made a lot of choices in my first nineteen years of life, some of them I don’t remember, some of them I try very hard to not remember and others fall somewhere in-between without necessarily losing their importance. Lately however, I’ve started thinking more critically about the process of making a choice, from first being confronted with it all the way till years after choice as been made. And this ‘choice-process-confrontation’ seems to be getting increasingly more important for myself as I get older and more and more choices are thrown at me. The first critical thought about a choice for me is what is factoring into my decision and how important are those things. For instance: Going to class. I could NOT go because A) It’s raining and I don’t want to get wet B) I’d rather smoke and play madden ‘12 C) I could just learn the stuff from the text book anyways. or I could go to class because A) At least my next hour will for sure be productive B) I can know exactly what the proff wants me to know C) Why go to college if I’m not going to class. Although the importance of staying home and doing what you’d rather do ie learn from the text book and sleep more, or play games changes depending on whether you need to take care of yourself or whether you need to take care of your school. So a choice is never cut and dry every time due to the fluctuation of importance of various factors. Another confusing and for me probably the hardest and most emotionally draining parts of a decision is getting not only prepared and maybe even excited for your choice but also trying not to linger on “what if’s…”. For every choice one makes there is at least one choice that you did not make and nothings going to change that. With that being said IF YOU DON’T KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN YOU’RE A FOOL AND MAKE/FOLLOW THE PATH’S YOUR CHOICES WILL LEAD YOU TO WITH CONVICTION, PRIDE, AND MOST OF ALL MODESTY.

New Years Part Three
I think this new years thing is going to be a trilogy. So this is it, it’s over. Happy new Years everyone, and remember 2012 WILL ONLY BRING YOU WHAT YOU BRING IT. In my 19 years of life that fact has become painted painfully clear to the back of my eye lids in the most ugly self-reflecting way. ANGST AND HOPE FOR ALL IN 2012.
